Toronto Blue Jays - AL East Champions

By: Eeshar Pannu

The Toronto Blue Jays won the American League East for the first time since 2015. After missing the postseason in 2024 and enduring a losing record, they have climbed this far in 2025.
They finished the regular season tied for the top seed in the AL East and claimed the division crown, advancing to their first American League Championship Series (ALCS) since 2016.

How the MLB Playoffs Work
For those new to baseball, the playoffs (postseason) are the final rounds that decide who wins the World Series. Twelve teams make it: six from the American League and six from the National League. Winners then advance to the Division Series, followed by the League Championship Series (ALCS and NLCS).
The champions of each league finally meet in the World Series, a best-of-seven series to announce the best team of the season. This year, the Blue Jays won the American League East and missed the World Series title in game 7.

Key Players and Changes
Heading into the season, the Jays made big off-season changes: they signed veteran pitcher Max Scherzer on a one-year deal and reliever Jeff Hoffman in the bullpen.
Offensively, the club posted a team slash of .265/.333/.427, which ranked 1st in the American League in on-base percentage.
Veteran slugger George Springer enjoyed a career-best regular season (hitting .309 with 32 home runs, 84 runs batted in and 18 stolen bases).
On the pitching side, while the starting pitchers were average overall (the team ranked 22nd in earned average run among starters), the bullpen improved in one-run games (from 19-30 to 19-14 this season).

Season Highlights
The Blue Jays’ 2025 season was packed with unforgettable moments that showed how far the team had come. On September 21, Toronto officially clinched a playoff spot with an 8–5 win over the Kansas City Royals, becoming the first American League team to secure a postseason berth.
Just a week later, on September 28, the Jays defeated the Tampa Bay Rays to win their first AL East Division title since 2015. That victory also earned them home-field advantage, meaning they’d play more playoff games in front of their home crowd at Rogers Centre.
In the playoffs, the Jays stayed hot. They beat the New York Yankees in the Division Series, winning the best-of-five matchup three games to one.

World Series Playoffs
The 2025 World Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Toronto opened with an 11–4 win in Game 1. The Dodgers bounced back in Game 2 for a 5–1 victory, then a 6–5, 18-inning win in Game 3. The Jays fought back with a 6–2 win in Game 4 and a clutch Game 5 victory to move within one win of their first title since 1993. But the Dodgers stayed alive, taking Game 6 (3–1) and completing the comeback in Game 7, winning 5–4. Though the Jays fell short, their playoff run re-ignited national pride and reminded fans that Toronto is once again a force in baseball.

Conclusion
The 2025 season was a statement for the Toronto Blue Jays. After years of rebuilding and setbacks, the team proved to be one of the top competitors in the MLB. From missing the playoffs in 2024 to winning the AL East title and reaching Game 7 of the World Series, showed determination, teamwork, and belief. Even though the Jays missed their first championship in over three decades, this season laid the foundation for future success and reminded fans that the Blue Jays are back, stronger than ever.
