Remnants of Light

By: Haya Saleem

she was a black hole
a dark star collapsing into itself
collecting emotions but never releasing
until she met him

he was a comet
emanating light so bright,
her black hole could not grab it all
carving a wound across her darkness
and for the first time,
she felt warmth that did not vanish in her own shadows

an unexpected friend slicing through her silence
leaving behind a trail for her to follow

his orbit jostled her gravity
loosening the weight she thought she had to carry alone
she stopped swallowing the universe,
and started shining it back

but then he had to leave
she waved a tearful goodbye to her friend,
comets pass by,
sometimes friends leave

but she remembers his light,
she remembers the way he changed her black hole
how she went from a damaged star,
into one that shined as bright as him

he did not turn her into a star,
he showed her he was flickering all along

his passing did not patch her darkness
it reminded her that she still had sparks beneath it,
and out of the darkness,

a star reformed
