Right Brain VS Left Brain
By: Spencer Brodie

Inside the head of a peculiar human, there lies a complex structure known as the brain. The brain is split into two halves, left and right.
“I represent the left hemisphere of cognition,” the left brain announces in a professional manner, “I am known as an intellectual being”. Without warning, the right brain shouts, “And I’m the right brain! I’m pretty smart too.” The human tends to agree with the right brain more than the left, which often leads to an explosive amount of emotions and feelings in them.
Once the left brain is complex enough to start the process of overthinking, the right brain steals its negative behaviour, and modifies it to an extreme. This paranoid state that the human is neglected in, creates a situation where one resides in two realities. The right brain believes nothing is real, and will continue to persuade the human into this mindset as well. Every day is a repeat of the last, and the human struggles in this dream-like third person vision. Meanwhile, the left brain wants to live its life to the fullest and make the most out of everything. Indeed, a worthy opponent.
Today is no different than any other— the human gets on the bus on the way to school. No less than 60 seconds into the ride, the right brain begins yapping: “How many times have we driven past this road, if not only once. It isn’t real.” “Right brain, you're poisoning the mind of this human with a nonsensical noise,” states the left brain. The human begins shaking their right leg in an anxious panic. The left brain attempts to rationalize the thought, only to be met with an illogical answer from the right brain, attempting to further push this agenda. Terribly, the anxiety and confusion of the human continues to wreak havoc throughout the school day. This means that the human must stick to ignoring those who try to help, scrap the act of eating, walk slowly, soon becoming barely human.
Yelling and shouting from the left brain does not phase the weaklings to rise up. The constant turmoil leads to the development of a poorly kept human civilization. Greasy hair, tired eyes, dry lips, 10 pounds lighter, yellowed nails and teeth. The right brain argues, “Who cares about how we look? It means nothing,” which the human finds to be a satisfying response.
The human goes home to their family— a loud bang is heard in the meanwhile, echoing through the house. The parents and twin siblings run towards the sound as the human watches from a distance. Their grandparent fell down the stairs and is now unconscious. As the family weeps and panics, the human sits silently. “We need to get up! Now!” exclaims the left brain. “Why? There's no reason to,” responds the right brain. “No reason? Our grandparent is in trouble! We—,” The left brain is interjected. The parents of the human call for their child in desperation, “What are you doing! Do something! Help him! Hello? Are you awake over there?” The right brain whispers soothingly, “Don’t move. Don’t listen. None of this is real. Nothing matters.” The human listens to its guidance mind, not doing so much as blinking. “You’re insane! You’re disgusting! What kind of person has no emotions!” screams the family. Out of anger and disbelief, the parents throw an object at the human, only missing by an inch. In response, the human does not flinch.

Some time has passed since this incident— how much time? The human cannot answer. The behaviour experienced by the parents set off a streak of isolation and miscommunication between family ties. The human has not spoken to their parents since the last calamity, causing their mindset to decay even further. The right brain force feeds the human more lies about their feelings, and predictably, the left brain is thrown out of the picture.
Days pass, months go by, years cycle through, until, the human has had a breakthrough. A simple word that makes everything clear. “Derealization?” the right brain questions. “Yes! This is the answer! It is when one does not feel in touch with reality, exactly as you describe daily. With this knowledge, we can get help! We can save the human!” answers the left brain. “I don’t think so,” proudly states the right brain. “That sounds silly! Everything I think is the truth.”
The conversation has come to censor the left brain completely. Nothing it says seems to be heard by the human any longer. The human’s mind begins to fog up, and go blank, exactly like their false reality. The right brain is the sole winner and perpetrator, as should it be.
